Gustave Flaubert’s tragic heroine comes alive again as Mia Wasikowska is seen in the first photo from Sophie Barthes’s new big screen adaptation of “Madame Bovary,” as unveiled today by EW.
Looking gloomy and unhappy and perfectly cast, Wasikowska plays Emma Bovary, a French farm girl who marries a rich doctor (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) in the hopes of a better life but doesn’t quite find it, and throws herself into several extra-marital affairs in an attempt to fill the void. Paul Giamatti, Logan Marshall-Green, Rhys Ifans and Ezra Miller play some of the other men in her life, with filming now underway in Normandy, France, where the novel is set.
No distribution news just yet on the new “Madame Bovary,” but with Wasikowska leading the way, it probably won’t be long before this gets snapped up. For now, the first official image is below.
